Thanks to Joseph for this report. And I agree, Blacks in America suffer discrimination on a daily basis with racial profiling by the police, discrimination in housing and jobs, and as victims of hate crimes. Let me also point out that Jewish people have been at the forefront of the civil rights movement and have worked for every social justice cause in numbers and intensity that put other groups to shame --most likely because their Jewish teachings urge protection of the poor and defense of the oppressed.
That said, Joseph seems to scoff at the idea of anti-semiticism as being a real problem. 6 million dead Jews in Nazi Germany would disagree with him. In a report on anti-Arab hate crimes in America post-9/11, a SF Chronicle article reported that these have increased 4-fold since 9/11. But that same report listed the number of hate crimes against Jewish Americans to be 2 and a half times greater than those against Arab-Americans.
That means for every 4 hate crimes committed against Arabs there are 10 hate crimes committed against Jews.
So while Joseph is correct in there is not a great problem with police stopping people for "driving while Jewish" there is a problem with anti-semiticism in American society.
I personally think the historical revisionists who have turned history on its ear to make the Jews the oppressors and the Arab armies massed to annihilate them the "victims" is a form of anti-semiticism. Holocaust denial is another form.
I understand that I am in the minority at indymedia on this issue, but the facts speak for themselves.
Someone tried to set the UCSC Hillel on fire earlier this year. The personal at the 7/11 store caught it and very little damage was done. But Hillel, which is hardly the cutting edge of Zionism, was targeted by someone in Santa Cruz at 3 AM. This is anti-semiticism in Santa Cruz.
