roknich, you are more correct than you may know! We all can learn a lot from the dictionary!

In Webster's New International Dictonary (2nd edition) the original meaning of "chattle" was:

1.property, specifically goods or money, or **livestock**
2. a **human slave or bondsman**

The word "cattle" is from the MIddle English
**"chatel" (meaning "goods"- and the french word "caput (which means "head" as in head of cattle (see my other post above the one you wrote)
