You just want to fight the new hotel and conference center because you and your low-income buddies can't afford to stay in such places nor attend conferences at such centers. In your myopic and over-simplified world view you use "the rich" as your universal one-size-fits-all scapegoat. With nothing productive to do with your time, you attack the hotel. You attack those who are building modern society stone by stone, instead of making positive contributions (because that would require commitment and hard work.)
No wonder Santa Cruz sucks down so much public money in handouts from its neighboring cities, counties, and even states. Not only will none of you work for a living, you refuse to let others work for a living! That's why tourism and UCSC are your economic lifeblood, keeping your grocery stores and head shops and independent book stores in business. And you would crush them too if you could, of that I am sure.
