Regarding the use of the red star and connections to Fidel: The EZLN, to my knowledge, had not until la sexta declaracion ever publicly supported the Cuban state due to its close relationship with the Mexican state. Only with the most recent comuniques have the Chiapanecos pledged their support for the Cuban people (by offering to send food).
When Cuba is oppressive and Communist, it is a different oppressive Communism than the oppressive communism of Mexico. Communism is not a monolithic system that exists in a vaccume. Is your problem with stars? Or just the color red? Maybe the combination of the two? Are green stars okay?
Perhaps we need new terms.
Perhaps we need new symbols.
But we cannot assign a single permanent meaning to a symbol as simple as a red star, since it has been 'used' by freedom fighters on every continent.
I personally see the red star as an anti-imperialist symbol more than a Communist one. I see it as a symbol of resistance, not of oppression. Who needs all the cold war McCarthyist redbaiting?
