On Friday August 6, the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, the Santa Cruz Weapons Inspection Team attempted another inspection of Lockheed-Martin's large facility on Empire-Grade Road. A well-attended rally and press conference on the steps of the County building, where activists spoke about Lockheed-Martin's (L-M) local and global activities and the dangers of nuclear war, preceeded the inspection attempt.

Following the press conference more than 60 community members carpooled up Empire-Grade as far as the sherrif's deptarment would allow. The delegation walked up to the gates of L-M's facility and demanded to inspect the premises for WMDs.

The weapons inspectors were met at the locked gate by several L-M representatives, two of whom answered questions about the facility and its activities. On earlier visits, L-M officials had refused to even speak to the SC WIT; now they've engaged in conversation, if contrived, and PROMISED to continue negotiation and dialogue.

Patriotic Correctness: the Hiroshima cover-up
Friday morning, on the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima, members of several local organizations put together a well-attended rally and press conference on the steps of the County building.
Audio from the Press Conference will be posted below
Jenn Laskin, Lynda Marin, Peter Lumsdaine, and Sharon Delgado spoke about the local and global activities of Lockheed-Martin (L-M) and the dangers of nuclear war

The answers Dave gave were very PR heavy, letting people know that everything L-M does is safe and reassuring the skeptical crowd that we have nothing to worry about. He refused to allow any of us access to the facility but vaguely committed to sitting down with representatives of the Weapons Inspection Team to discuss conditional entrance to the grounds of L-M.
Upon learning that several members of the Weapons Inspection Team needed to use the bathroom, however, Dave allowed two groups inside. They were carefully watched and were allowed only to inspect the restroom, which was not gendered.
More photos and audio from both the Press Conference and the Restroom Inspection to follow.

Weapons Inspection, cont'd
The flyer had been defaced, however, to read "Why should we care about Lockheed-Martin? *Because you have no life*"and next to the Hiroshima Anniversary information, the words *Yee-Hah! Good ol' Boy.*
Lockheed-Martin's Public Relations man pointed out that the security guards were not employees of L-M, but the damage had been done: the public had had enough PR.
Definitely NOT an indymedia camera...
The Bathroom Inspectors were again locked out and the group proceeded as planned, hanging photos and art on the fence and offering thoughts and reflections on nuclear war and its effects on the global community. At the end of each statement, the group recited a line from Saul William's Pledge of Resistance:
"Another world is possible, and we pledge to make it real."
Finally, the inspectors, turned away by L-M's PR man, headed back to Santa Cruz. On earlier visits, L-M officials refused to even speak to the SC WIT, now they've engaged in conversation, if contrived, and PROMISED to continue negotiation and dialogue. Next time the WIT comes up the road, perhaps we will finally pass the guard house and enter Lockheed's mountain top fortress.
Dave, the PR man, hopped in his hot rod
and sped down the mountain, back to his L-M office where everyone *believes* his nice words about safety, responsibility, accountability, and peace.
"We're gonna trouble Lockheed-Martin"
Thanks to all the Inspectors, to Art & Revolution, and to the RCNV. Activities marking the anniversary of the Nuclear bombings continue all weekend long...
