Laura Flynn was a personal assistant to Haitian President Aristide from '96-2000. Flynn is now with the Haiti Action Committee, a network of activists who have supported the Haitian struggle for democracy since 1991. She's editor of Eyes of the Heart: Seeking a Path for the Poor in the Age of Globalization, by Aristide..... We spoke 3/3/04 afew days after the coup. While much has happened since then, this interview discusses much of the history up to the present moment....

This week, US forces used Apache gunships to attack targets in Baghdad for the first time since the fall of Saddam Hussein a year ago. On Wed., Marines shot a hellfire rocket and dropped a 500-pound, laser-guided bomb on a mosque in Fallujah were more than 40 are believed killed. Sahar Saba, a soft spoken young woman, stood firmly as darkness fell. She spoke of the hell that is her home; where 'everyone has a story to tell’ about a sister, a brother, a parent, or a child who was tortured, raped, killed; sometimes before their eyes.

She repeated several times that the problem of fundamentalism persists in Afghanistan. That RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, sees the persistence of fundamentalism as the major problem for women, children, and the Afghani culture in general. That the US attack and presence has done little to improve the situation, that indeed the situation has gotten worse under the US supported warlords.

Honduran community activist Gilberto Flores and Jenni Petullo of Rights Action spoke about the history and current political situation in Honduras on April 13 at the Resource Center for Nonviolence in Santa Cruz.

Privatization of public services, the building of mega-dams, deforestation, and harmful mining practices, as well as human rights abuses are among the challenges facing Honduran communities. Flores and Petullo discussed how these problems fit within the context of corporate globalization, international financial institutions, and multilateral trade agreements.

This event provided an in-depth perspective on Honduras, presented ways North Americans can support struggles for global justice.
