On January 22, a candlelight vigil was held at the town clock in Santa Cruz to celebrate 32 years of Roe v. Wade and support the right of choice for all womyn.

Wearing a burka made out of an amerikan flag, this womyn expresses how the voices of womyn are being silenced under the guise of amerikan values.

It was very nice speaking with some of the vigilers. The womyn in the burka gave a beautiful bracelet which she made (and also sells for a good cause...) and I gave her a pamphlet about indymedia and santa cruz indymedia.

Thanks OrganicJane, whoever you are out there, for posting the announcement about the candlelight vigil on the sc-imc newswire.

And in the city....

"this womyn expresses how the voices of womyn are being silenced under the guise of amerikan values."

What?

A woman's right to choose (to kill her own child) is one of the most openly and highly debated subjects in America! I hear no silence.

Further, this woman is confused. It is not American values that are invoked against the Pro Choice side nearly so often as Christian values are. If she wore a burqua made of some kind of Christian flag, that would make sense.

Or if she used the flag of any nation where abortion is illegal (25% of the world's nations!)

But given that America is a nation where Roe v Wade has stood as the law of the land for many years now, to use the American flag as the symbol of her repression is just ignorant.

Sounds like someone is pre-disposed towards blaming America for anything and everything.

Wearing your bribe with pride, Bradley? A true journalist would have politely refused such a gift.

"Independent" Media, riiiight. Independent of corporate influence? Yes.

Independent of partisan, left-wing political prejudice? Not so much. What makes you any different from a Fox reporter embedded with the Army? Other than your shoestring budget.

a true journalist...

thanks for chiming in here 'question' about true journalism. WE indy-journalists speak through action. all the critters and people in this world that make up indymedia can decide for themself if i am "a true journalist."

"a true journalist" from the corporate-driven, consumption-based, media will show up at our demonstartions and pretend to be impartial and would most likely refuse a kind gift such as a bracelet supporting womyns rights. that kind of "true journalist" would mostly likely not have been in a conversation with her anyway...

as i spoke with the womyn in the burka, the sun was quickly going down, thus significantly limiting my ability to get the quality photos i enjoy creating. but i did not care because i was more interested in listening to what she had to say.

i don't have to leave the vigil at a certain time to get 'a story' out in the daily paper or on the 'tv news.'

well, i need to wrap this response now because i'm off to hold down the airwaves for a couple hours on freak radio santa cruz...

i'll now refer 'question' to www.indymedia.org

Indymedia is a collective of independent media organizations and journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage. Indymedia is a democratic media outlet for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth.
