On Friday May 13, Tent University Santa Cruz held a rally in the Baytree Plaza at UCSC. Pat True of CUE, Paul Ortiz of the Community Studies department, community member Robert Norse, TUSC organizers and other student activists at UCSC used a megaphone to share their thoughts.

In our fair city, a community focused on art and connection, there is no place to meet in public that is unmediated by commerce. All the parks, beaches, the wharf, the boardwalk, the levies, state parks, the University, and the Pogonip are all closed after dark. If you want to meet friends or strangers at night, your only option is to dive into the stream of commerce, bars, cafes, restaurants, or movies

Dow Chairman Bill Stavropolous responded with a curt dismissal to "Finisterra's" suggestion that the company use its first-quater profits to clean up the Bhopal plant site.

Yvon Neptune remains the Prime Minister of Haiti. He was kidnapped during the military coup last February. The last news of his condition was that he could no longer stand. He has survived beatings, illlness, and finally a hunger strike - so far.

On May 12, S.E.I.U. workers, students, labor organizers and other commmunity members demonstrated outside Sunshine Villa Assisted Living on Beach Hill in Santa Cruz. Sunshine Villa is owned by Regent Assisted Living which is based in Portland, Oregon. The owner is very worried that if Sunshine Villa is unionized, then the many other assited living facilities he owns in 7 other states will become unionized as well.

You can hear some raw audio from the rally which includes the voices of Yolanda, Robert, Jeffrey Smedberg, Joe Keffer, Julian Posadas and Cerise Ortiz. I very much regret that I made a mistake and some of the audio I recorded has been lost, which included words from Tim Fitzmaurice and Yolanda, a worker recently fired from Sunshine Villa. I'll learn from my mistake and like we told Sunshine Villa, "We'll be back."
