Santa Claus Visits Santa Cruz to "Stop Global Warming!
13 Jun 2004
by
~Bradley, V-Man, and Max

On June 12, Santa Claus came to Main Beach in Santa Cruz to talk with beach goers about global warming while delievering home the message that, "Santa Doesn't Want To Be Ho-Ho-Homeless."
As soon as next week, the US Senate may vote on the McCain-Lieberman
Climate Stewardship Act. This is a bill that would require polluting industries to make modest cuts in carbon-dioxide emissions, the pollutant that thickens the "carbon blanket" around the planet and leads to global warming. The measure was last voted on in the fall. At that time both Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA) voted for the bill.
"Global warming will have devastating consequences for the economy of
California among other things", said Max Boykoff of
Duyure Adelante. "It is clear that our Senators here in California recognize that. But we need more Senators on board, so to speak. We are urging all people to call on their Senators to vote for this first step to stop global warming."
The popularity of the new film, "
The Day After Tomorrow," has put the issue of global climate change at the forefront of American consciousness. While most movie-goers dismiss the film's doomsday predictions as sci-fi fantasy, some climatologists and concerned citizens are seizing on the opportunity to talk about the realities of global warming.

Anti-Slavery Activists Protest Kofi Annan

(Updated)
by
Contributed by Becky Johnson
This article, originally published in the Harvard Crimson on June 10, 2004 reports on a protest of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's inaction on the human rights catastrophe developing in Sudan. Slavery, starvation, and genocide are occurring as the Arab/totalitarian military in the north is brutally enslaving and killing the mostly Black African Christians in the south. With some estimating that without worldwide intervention, as many as 500,000 people will die in the next three months, the UN secretary-general's silence means certain death.

Cold Turkey - by Kurt Vonnegut
13 Jun 2004
by
Kurt Vonnegut / In These Times
I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America’s becoming humane and reasonable. Because power corrupts us, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces.
