Santa Cruz Recruiters Closed for Peace Until Further Notice

Santa Cruz Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines recruiting offices stayed closed all day Wednesday, March 5, because of a large rally and civil disobedience action held outside their offices at 41st and Clares Streets in Capitola. They will remain “closed for peace” until further notice, as recruiters plan to stay away as long as protests continue.

Santa Cruz Anti-war Activists Close Military Recruiting Center

Over a hundred people rallied outside of the Armed Forces Recruitment Center in Capitola to express their opposition to the impending threat of a United States invasion of Iraq. Part of the National Moratorium to Stop the War on Iraq, today’s action marked the first coordinated effort at a worldwide day of non-violent direct action to resist war.

With one email, poet Sam Hamill has revitalized the anti-war movement in American poetry circles. But thanks belong to First Lady, Laura Bush. She invited Hamill to a February 12 White House symposium called - Poetry: The American Voice. Hamill’s reply was an email to his friends.
