While the Bush admininistration defends its use of wiretapping to monitor the activities of US citizens, city officials in Santa Cruz, CA are coming under fire over revelations that undercover police were caught spying on locals planning a Do-It-Yourself New Year's parade. The case raises serious questions about the legality of the surveillance, and has city residents and civil libertarians shook up. FSRN's Vinny Lombardo has more.

Santa Cruz author, Jenny Kurzweil began writing "Fields That Dream: Journey to the Roots of Our Food" six years ago because she felt the disconnect between herself and her food. She didn't have an agent, publisher or MFA, but she plowed ahead anyway. The book is a thoroughly researched introduction to small-scale sustainable farming, and a fantastic read (Fulcrum Publishing, available at local bookstores).
