Why can't you all just not talk to the recruiters? Why badger them and go through all of the trouble? It just makes you look as bad as them.... And why not also protest any other corporations that have problems with sexism or racism or other unfair policies? This is rather diappointing, as it makes you all look just as narrowminded as the war-mongers in the office now.

also reject the "patriot act" minimum age of military service and FULL adulthood should be the same. if they have the responsabilty to die for their country, theyshould be able to vote, drink, etc. just like the adults who enjoy the protection.

If someone joins the military without knowing the full facts, it's their fault - this is not a small decision in ones life, and if you do it blithely, I have no sympathy.

I would understand setting up your own "booth" that would publicise your views, but actively preventing the recuiters seems fairly hypocritical amongst a group that I would hope preaches free speech, and for that right not to be inhibited.

The military is unique to other sexist/racist institutions in that it's anti-Queer policies are directly in violation of UC and UCSC policies on discrimination. They have no place in the job fair.

FYI: Today, the Army, Marines, Navy were kicked off UCSC by more than 200 militant students. In addition, the Dept. of Corrections immediately left once they saw the march go straight into the career center.

Part of the point is that the campus already has a clear policy of not allowing employers at the job fair if those employers openly discriminate on the basis of race/sex/gender/preference/ability/etc.

Since the military DOES openly discriminate, then they should be treated like any other potential employer and not be allowed to recruit on campus.

Certainly there are more issues, and other employers whose practices are offensive and/or harmful in various ways, but the military is the most egregious violator of this campus rule.

Of course sexual harassment and racism happens elsewhere-- it's just that the military tolerates it and encourages it a lot more. Take a look at their official procedures for investigating rapes for example-- they're phenomenally biased against the accuser.

Sure, I agree that people should make their own decisions. But you should take into account how many people will be affected by this decision. If we prevent people from joining the military the war machine will run out of meat.

If someone joins the military the war can continue and more people will die.- it's that simple, I am not opposed to people making unimformed decisions.

But when those decisions take money away from education, health and social services and on top of that harm thousands in Iraq or Afghanistan I will do what I can to stop such decisions. Excuse me if I care.

A table should be set up near by the military recruters run by veterans of foreign wars. They can tell the young people and warn them about how horrible war is since they were there. Also, they can explain how the US govt is NOT supporting the troops by cutting veterans benefits.

I think they would be listened to. Does anyone know if the SC Chapter of Veterans for Peace has any ideas about this strategy?

People have no right to join the US military today. It is a criminal enterprise that has not fought an honest and justified battle since WWII. It continues to this day to lay out civilian casualities by the hundred thousand, while serving as the hired muscle of the heads of the largest organized crime gang in the western hemipshere: Washington D.C.

I would rather suffer the humiliation of working at Hot Dog on a Stick at the shopping mall and know that I am making an honest living, than work as an amoral professional killer in the US military.

My grandfather served and died in WW II, and I am proud of his sacrifice. But soldiers today kill for sport and for a paycheck in blind service to power-drunk masters. Soldiers today are scum, who wouldn't deserve to serve under my grandfather anyway. Anyone who joins the US military today, is agreeing to kill innocent people for no good god damn reason.

But what right do you have in denying people the choice? We live in a democracy where people think differently, some people think we are achieving peace and freedom by waging war in Iraq.

What if you were forcibly denied to voice your opinion by a large group, just because it's in the minority, is that something you'd enjoy?

A proper response in a civilized society is to let your voice be heard, and make your point with reason and fact, not with a mob.

When people consider civilized choices, such as what grocery store to shop at, church to join, movie to see, or political party for which to register, then civilized dialog is appropriate.

The important point here, that should not be lost is that the U.S. Military is EXPLICITLY, OFFICIALLY and UNDENIABLY a discriminatory institution based on their 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy.

The UC system has a non-discrimination policy which includes sexual-orientation. By inviting the U.S. Military to the campus, the Career Center is in direct violation of those policies.

At the current moment, we are unable to ban military recruiters from universities because the U.S. government DENIES them their free speech to ban military recruiters under the Solomon Amendments - which links federal $$$ to allowing recruiters and ROTC programs.

However, UC and UCSC can do everything in its power to prevent discrimination. They can take more agressive measures. Since the current UC and UCSC is unwilling to do so, it has become the responsibility of students to do what no one else will - administer UC's non-discrimination policy by kicking the U.S. Military off at every visit.

Murderers and thieves? You don't possess a shred of the courage, discipline and honor that the men and women of the armed forces have. While you are banging your plastic drums and performing colorful street theatre in the safety of Santa Cruz, they are putting their lives on the line to help create a free and democratic Iraq. It must really gall you to watch the progress made as Iraq freely chooses a Kurd President, a Shia vice-president and a Sunni Prime Minister.

First of all, there were 19 hijackers on sept 11th, so stop making up numbers, otherwise the Bush admin might offer you a job. Second, how do you presume to know what goes on over there? Because you read the reports that were edited a minimum of three times before they were laid before your eyes? I ask the question again, how many friends of yours went to Iraq? How many family members? I would wager to say, by your completely off-base analysis of the situation that you know no one over there but some journalists in your "fourth-removed" relationship.

I see a real dilemma arising out of this discussion: how to keep fascism at bay.

It's a two-edged sword: how do you combat fascism without resorting to the censorship, repression, war etc. the fascists themselves use?

Well, I guess the students who "kicked" the recruiters off campus are proud of themselves. I hope someday they will be mature enough to realize it is people like the recruiters who make sacrifices so that they can act the way they do. And I wonder what the campus will do when the government withdraws the funds it supplies the school with to operate on. Be careful what you ask for.............
