keep it up! CIA recruiters were kicked off a New York City campus last week due to the same tactics!

I think it's great that you decided to "get them off campus" during a job fair. What better way to help your fellow students than to disrupt their chance at job opportunities? You really know how to make things happen. I mean, they definitely won't be back next year, right? Your march must have changed so many policies and made so many recruiters think twice! It's awesome that you understand that multiple viewpoints are important and that you are SO respectful of those with viewpoints other than your own! AWESOME!!!

The military is an employer which cares nothing about rights or freedoms and the contract you sign with them is secondary to military objectives. The protesters saved alot of kids from getting brainwashed by callous, nihilistic recruiters. Good for them.

While I feel bad for the stressful position of the recruiters, the military has no right to be on campus recruiting while they practice discriminatory hiring tactics. Don't Ask Don't Tell is purely an Anti-Gay/Homophobic policy. They fire their military members who have identified themselves as gay. Their is no possible reason to keep such a policy intact except for ignorant and prejudice purposes. According to UCSC's own policies, no businesses that practice prejudice hiring policies are allowed on the UCSC campus. These protesters are heroes.

Great Job UCSC! I am attending SF State and we have issues with the military as well. Watch out! They have new tactic. Today, I recieved a phone call from the SF State Army Recruiter.

Section 9b of the Enlistment/Reenlistment Document, Armed Forces of the United States:

"Laws and regulations that govern military personnel may change without notice to me. Such changes may affect my status, pay, allowances, benefits, and responsibilities as a member of the Armed Forces REGARDLESS of the provisions of this enlistment/reenlistment document"

In other words - Recruiters can not make any promises and the contract means little because the military can change ANYTHING, at ANY TIME, WITHOUT NOTICE to you.

Servicemembers are also subject to the military justice system (UCMJ) which denies many of their fundamental rights - including the right to free speech and the right to assembly.

So it is a correct statement to say that "The military is an employer which cares nothing about rights or freedoms and the contract you sign with them is secondary to military objectives."

You obviously do not understand how the military operates and what it means to serve. The military is NOT a democracy, many rules exist to save the lives of military members, not take away their freedoms. Why dont you go ahead and tell me about all fundemental rights the UCMJ removes from service members. It's great to see activism is alive and well on our college campuses. ChrisA is correct when he stated that the military in not a democracy. Soldiers have NO rights, they just take orders and considering their Commander and Chief is an idiot, it's no surprise that students want NO PART of the military. It's one thing to defend our country against threats to our democracy but today's youth is too smart to drink the Kool-Aid of this administration. They know that wars are being waged for profit with NO regard for the blood spilled by our children in the military. The military has a long history of being racist, sexist and homophobic. This administration has done a good job of exibiting little regard for the brave soldiers who volunteer to serve by cutting their benefits and extending their tours. Not many young people want to volunteer to serve this administration. I wonder why?

Because of this protest, I wasn't able to pass my resume to three non-military companies that I seriously wanted to talk to at the job fair. Whether you like the military or not (I don't, by the way), they paid to attend that job fair. They pay to attend every job fair every year at every state University. It's not as if they were walking up to students and "brainwashing" them. They were waiting at their table for students to walk up to them. This was a futile protest that changed nothing. All it did was screw me and dozens of others over. Thanks people. Thanks a lot.

Free Speech? I guess it only applies to opinions officially sanctioned by your group.

The Military recruiters have free speech rights that the students denied by marching on the job fair. If you disagree with them it would have been a good oportunity to interact with them but instead you tried to "kick" them off campus. Many students are now or may someday be in the Military and the behavior of this group disappoints me.

Just a word of congrats from the UK. I'm a peace studies student and activist and I'm really impressed by this action and others you seem to be upto. Although we don't have this level of campus recruitment, the military over here are starting to get equally desparate. We shall do as you have shown us, no doubt, but well done for being there first. I graduated from Merrill almost twenty-five years ago in Politics. In 1982 spent eleven days in jail as a result of anti-nuclear direct action. I still support direct action. I strongly oppose the Iraq war, and I hate the militancy that has grown in our nation. But does anyone recall in "Fahrenheit 9-11" when Michaiel Moore needled Congressmen about not having a child in the military? Moore's point is that children of the elite (which many of you are) don't step foward to serve in the military. Whether or not you want to admit it, military action is sometimes neccessary (isn't there a genocide to stop in Sudan?). Those who celebrate driving the recruiters from campus are ensuring that our armed forces will not be integrated by the 'educated' class of America. the military is, and thanks to your actions, will continue to be a ghetto of the economically under privaleged. I know good LIBERAL ANTI IRAQ WAR people who have been overseas to Iraq and Afgahnistan, not because they wanted to go but because they were willing to go. John Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, and John Kerry all seved in their day. Bush and Cheney didn't. Which group do you have more in common with?

I am proud of you students acting in the tradition of those UCSC leaders of times past who examined social issues and stepped up. The Struggle Continues!

Military recruiters should stop targeting students. It's perfectly fine for those who enlist on their own to screw up their lives, but they shouldn't be allowed to influence others in doing the same.

The People United We Never Be Defited! This is the only way to get back our rights back from the right wing reactionary corporate ruling elete.

The" Don't Ask Don't Tell " policy is a sorry excuse for a reason to stop recruiters from doing their JOB. You must understand that it is a regulation by military law. So you target the men and women who do nothing more than their job. The students need to get off of their butts and take their problems to the people who make these laws. Just remember who gives us the right to demonstrate. The Soilder!!! Without them we would all be under a different rule!

In the 60's a friend of mine looked at a billboard paid for by the farmers urging Yes on a proposition that would have benefited the farmers. The billboard was covered with UFW grafitti urging a NO vote. He remarked "apparently the farmers can buy billboards, the farm workers can only buy spray paint cans. So here is the deal. The pro military recuiters had permission, funding, and the full force of the military industrial complex behind them. The protestors had spit and guts, only. Now in that light, let's reassess whose rights were tread upon Mr. Sosbee.
