Resist Create Unite; photos from the 4/18 TUSC march
On Monday April 18, around 150 hundred people, most of whom are currently enrolled as undergrads at UCSC, marched from UCSC's Baytree Plaza down to the base of campus. Several large puppets decided to join the march as well. Meanwhile at the base of campus, other folks were busy creating a large steel structure to provide a respite from the hot sun.

Once we reached the base of campus, several TUSC organizers stood on a wooden platform and explained a little bit about the organizing that went into TUSC. Dan from AFSCME spoke in support of TUSC, Students Against War (SAW) and Student Worker Coalition for Justice.

The protest was only to fight for our right to use our university space in a peaceful, education-centered way-- They formed a giant tent city as an alternative university today, and tonight
25+ students were arrested... for peaceful, non-violent protesting
The structure was erected to symbolize the displacement of higher education in our state... anyone who attends a UC or Cal State knows about the fcuked-up and unjust budget priorities that manifest at our campuses (massive student fee increases, and --as we protested in our student/worker STRIKE last Thursday, the absolutely UNlivable wages for campus workers.
this has to end.
come out and support.

I have two concerns that I want to raise, however.
One: I'm worried that we're starting to believe our own propaganda. There's something very dangerous about this.
Two: I have been hearing homophobic comments about the new chancellor. This is not ok. The racist, classist system we live in (what bell hooks calls white supremicist capitialist patriarchy) is also a homophobic system, and to make homophobic comments in support of anti-oppression is to reinscribe oppresion. Please, folks... no homophobic slurs about the new Chancellor.
