Animal Liberation Front Raids Future Primate Facility
Quakertown, PA: The Animal Liberation Front (ALF) visited a Pennsylvania plant nursery whose owner is planning to turn it into a breeding facility of non-human primates to be sold to animal experimenters. Owner Michael Hsu admits to tens of thousands of dollars in damages, and has seen his plans withdrawn from Thursday's agenda for the Richland Township Planning Commission as community opposition has grown.
Activists overturned and destroyed about 1,000 peonies, including some rare breeds last Thursday night. They poured paint stripper on two vehicles and spray-painted graffiti on buildings and greenhouses at Peonyland, 475 Church Road, Richland Township. They wrote phrases -- such as ''Fuck with primates, get fucked by us. ALF''; ''the ALF is watching''; and ''this will just be the start'' -- on greenhouses and storage garages at the business owned by the Hsu family. ''I can't say right now whether or not we'll continue,'' Michael Hsu said Friday.
In an anonymous e-mail forwarded to The Morning Call Newspaper, ALF claimed responsibility for the Peonyland vandalism, saying the group visited the business and ''entered several greenhouses and completely trashed them, dumping hundreds and hundreds of bushes and making a mess of the place. We also poisoned over a hundred planted bushes — have fun finding out which ones, Hsu.''
The organization, in the e-mail, warns owner Michael Hsu to ''drop your plans for a primate prison.'' ''If you imprison so much as one monkey to sell to a lab we will make you pay dearly. We are watching you …''
The kennel supposedly would house up to 500 monkeys until they are shipped to medical research laboratories, where they would be subjected to painful experiments before being killed, usually years or decades later. "Experimentation on animals has been shown to be outdated and unlikely to result in cures for human diseases", states Dr. Jerry Vlasak, a practicing surgeon and former animal experimenter himself. "The so-called scientists who kill animals in labs are frustrated clinicians who cannot or will not practice medicine that helps people. They are wasting millions of scarce health-care dollars on useless research that will never help one of my patients".
The monkeys would be shipped from a supply company in Beijing and would be tested for tuberculosis, according to the development application, which lists Chao Hsu and Susan Hsu as co-applicants. The incident is under investigation by Richland Township police and a joint terrorism task force of agents from the FBI and other federal agencies.

Tread On Me?
Now that you have destroyed my other business and rare peonies, I'll just have to go ahead with the planned research facility.
In case you have more brilliant ideas, I am placing land mines on my property that could go off under you feet next time you trespass.

I have some questions for the HUMAN that wrote the above comment.
Could you please explain what you mean by "this issue."
If you think "it's good to cover this issue" then why are you "not sure it should be on the front page of our local indymedia."

Chill. I'm down with the struggle, I just don't think that local actions happening on the other side of the country neccessarily deserve front-page action here in santa cruz. indymedia.us - fine - indymedia.org - fine. But I feel like sc indymedia should retain its emphasis on local and regional struggles.
If you check out the front page of sc indymedia right now, you'll see that the article on ALF's actions is the only one that does not pertain to local/regional struggles. Now, if there was some text connecting the actions in PA to something in the wider sc community, that'd be fine - but it doesn't have that connection.

I'll ask again:
1) Could you please explain what you mean by "this issue."

i think it is fantastic that santa cruz indymedia has coverage of actions going on around the world. It is nice to know that santa cruz indymedia is an important resource "beyond the bubble" of santa cruz. As for indymedia.us and indymedia.org, it did have coverage of this action.... but only after the SC-IMC feature was syndicated into the right column of those websites.
"If you check out the front page of sc indymedia right now, you'll see that the article on ALF's actions is the only one that does not pertain to local/regional struggles. You claim to be "down with the struggle" and this is fantastic... but you really don't understand the issues at all if you fail to understand how animal torture in PA and resistance to it relates to us humans that frequent SC-IMC. Animal torture is certainly not limited to Quakertown, PA.
We are all a part of this sick system and we are all responsible for bringing it down.
people will continue to take action.

Re: Animal Liberation Front Raids Future Primate Facility
The Bush admin. supports experimenting on poor people using pesticides. The Nazis and Japanese also experimented on humans during world war 2.
Exploitation and abuse is always wrong. Where will it end? How far will medical technology be taken? Do we want to live 200 years? Forever? Do we want to be gods?
Experimenting on helpless animals is the most hideous form of being a bully. Humans arent the only species on earth. They just act like it.
