Defend Women's Reproductive Autonomy, Confront the Right-Wing Invasion, and Shut down the Walk for Life.
Meet at 11 am. Sunday, Jan. 21. Justin Herman Plaza at the Embarcadero, San Francisco. Look for the info table.

Spokescouncil to plan Civil Disobedience:
Sunday, Jan. 15. San Francisco. 3 pm. Location to be announced.
free23.jpg
Last January, the Walk for Life came to San Francisco to bring their
anti-Choice/anti-reproductive rights ("pro-life"), pro-capitalist, and homophobic message to our city. Their march was
disrupted and rerouted by civil disobedience. This year they're at it again, and intend to bring out thousands (vast majority of whom are bussed in from other cities and towns), which means that we need to show up in full force and bring out just as many, if not more, people. We are calling on the people and workers of San Francisco and the Bay Area to rise up and completely stop them in their tracks and shut down their march.

They are marching to take away our autonomy, which we must defend at all
costs and by any means necessary.
These are the people that support government intervention in every aspect
of our lives not only limited to reproductive rights, but to the
regulation of life itself. The Walk for Life seeks to be the softer side
of the anti-choice movement, but don't fool yourself into thinking that
these people are not the reactionary forces that we fight against.

For us pro-choice means a lot more than choosing to have children.
Reproductive rights is an important part of the larger issue of having the
power to decide how to live your life. We sell our bodies to capitalism
and submit to the State. Religion has often survived to mask this order of
things and to justify our sacrifices. Pro-life means being able to
determine the path of your life, free from outside coercive forces, such
as bosses, government, controlling and abusive men, racism, war, and religion. Work is not a choice, it's a threat: obey and labor or starve!

Walk for Life
is a national organization run by wealthy elites--the ruling class. Their agenda is not only to continue
the subjugation of women but to maintain the larger class system. Social
conservatism and authoritarian religions are ideology that the ruling
class uses to gain allegiance and support from members of the working classes, even
though it goes against their real-life interests. The true interests of society's
have-nots lies in resistance, and ultimately, social revolution to overthrow the rich and
powerful who control and exploit them.

The Walk for Life also shrouds itself in feminist rhetoric. Co-sponsors
Feminists for Life are supporting a reform (criminalizing abortion and women's
reproductive rights) that will do nothing but harm women. They are walking hand in hand
with the elites who enforce discriminate against women in the workplace and push socially
destructive and sexist body and sexual standards and rigid, oppressive gender roles (the
capitalist media and advertising industry being a major tool in this). While they claim
to support women's freedom, they seem to have no problem with the operation of
sweatshops throughout the Global South, populated with women working for slave wages.
Ironically enough, the pro-"life" movement as a whole supports the most brutal
degradation and destruction of life through war and capitalism.

We're not going to take it anymore. It is a special affront that this march, whose leaders consistently whip up heterosexist hatred and social oppression against queer and trans people, is set in San Francisco--a city known for it's history of radical queer resistance, such as the famous late 70's uprising known as the White Night Riots.

We are calling for a festive, racous and confrontational approach to this
right wing invasion. Bring yourselves and your ideas to the Spokescouncil on Sunday, Jan.
15, to finalize plans of resistance. Autonomous direct actions to shut down the march are
also encouraged.

And bring yourself, your friends, coworkers, families, and lovers out to stop the
right-wing invasion and celebrate your autonomy on January 21st.

Fight the Right--In the Streets!

misguided

While I support the right to choose, I also support people's right to protest and demonstrate. If you want to make a counterdemonstration, that is one thing. Actively trying to stop what is people's constitutional right just plays into their hands. When you attack people (as this call to action seems to insinuate), you only hurt your cause and make people feel more self-righteous about their position.

I think provoking people to think would be far more effective than trying to stop them from marching. You will also come across better in the media. There are a lot of good reasons to uphold the right to choose. You should rely on the power of your arguments rather than compromise your cause through shout downs.

Misogynistic Religious Fanatics Should Be Confronted

The mobilization of misogynistic religious fanatics that are opposed to the rights of women is dangerous. Their radical rightist agenda is not just dangerous for women, but also attacks the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and tran community as well as non-Christians and non-whites.

While the government and corporate media work to suppress the actions of the left they promote the agenda and movements of the far right that are helping to take away our rights.

This march is a provocation against the people by the same movement that murdered Mathew Sheppard and blocks women from needed healthcare including abortions.

don't stereotype unless you want to be stereotyped

According to your logic, Steve, all the antiwar movement should be responsible for the radicals who split off and smashed property, etc. at the last couple of SF peace marches. Should all Muslims be condemned as terrorists too?

Though it makes for a much more simplified argument process, it is wrong to insinuate that people who consider themselves "pro-life" are guilty of heinous hate crimes such as the murder of the gay youth, Matthew Sheppard.

There are plenty of "pro-lifers" who were present at the execution of Tookie Williams and who fought for his release up until that day. What about them? The only difference between some "pro-lifers" and many progressives is the disagreement between when life begins. When they finally "get it" that the life of the baby in utero is ultimately dependent on the mother up until the baby's birth, then they often finally realize that legislating mandatory birth is not the way to go. Try asking one of these people how they can force a woman to have a baby when they aren't willing or able to support that child throughout their life. That will make them think long and hard. I know this because I've actually challenged some prolifers with these very questions and they have actually CHANGED THEIR POSITION as a result. Many of them have never been challenged on these issues.

Dialogue: its a good thing.

I would also like to add that I am very suspicious of men who rabidly denounce how anti-women other groups are, wave the pro-choice flag and then do very little to help women in many, many other ways women are oppressed. I'm not saying you are this way, Steve, but I've seen a lot of men rage on about the possibility of losing choice and then turn around and insult women who are fighting all forms of oppression for women. Personally, I think it all goes together. It boils down to the commodification of women. While others think they have claims to women's uteruses --- or their vaginas, breasts, mouths and hands --- then we will never be totally liberated.

The Anti-Choice Movement is a Threat to Human Rights

You’re suspicious of men that stand up for women's rights? OK, I can understand that, sexism damages people in many ways including creating divisions and suspicions.

As far as the anti-choicers are concerned, individuals can sometimes be talked to, but this movement can't be. They are led by sexist, homophobic religious fanatics that preach the kind of hate that killed Mathew Sheppard.

This anti-choice movement is opposed to human rights and gaining ground for imposing their minority views on the people through a sympathetic media and government. This movement is a threat to human rights. That is a fact, not a stereotype.

reality vs. rhetoric

"We are calling on the people and workers of San Francisco and the Bay Area to rise up and completely stop them in their tracks and shut down their march."

Huh? Not only is the author attacking the marchers 1st Amendment rights, he/she is also assurring them a whole lot of publicity. If no counter-protesters showed up, only a few people would probably notice they were there. Instead, you assure them top billing on the nightly news.

Though there might not be a lot of anti-choicers in San Francisco, there are plenty of them in the surrounding smaller communities. Don't most groups go to San Francisco to march? Why shouldn't they?

"Walk for Life
is a national organization run by wealthy elites--the ruling class. Their agenda is not only to continue
the subjugation of women but to maintain the larger class system. Social
conservatism and authoritarian religions are ideology that the ruling

This article makes a lot of claims, but gives absolutely no references to back these fantastic claims that amount to a statement of religious intolerance. It claims that this movement is backed by wealthy elites, but fails to name any. If you know anything about the pro-choice movement, you'd also know that it too is financed by wealthy, misogynistic elites. (For proof, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Scaife for an article on Richard Mellon Scaife, the anti-communist billionaire newspaper owner who crafted the scheme to bring down Bill Clinton through the Starr investigation and subsequent impeachment hearing.)

This article seems to be about as naive as most of the "pro-life" voters I've met, heavy on rhetoric with little facts to back it up. Though I am a feminist and pro-choice, this march is really meaningless to me. "Pro-lifers" have been around along time and most have been stupid enough to vote Republican based on this issue alone. This doesn't say a lot about their intelligence considering that the Republicans have had control of both houses of congress on several occasions and yet did absolutely nothing tangible to limit abortions at the federal level. The reason why is because they didn't actually want to.

The so-called Religious Right has been chumped by the Neo-Cons. The Religious-Right has cheered on the Republican party in exchange for legislation against abortion, but the Neo-Cons have just been playing along, without any real intent to ever change abortion laws. This is the main reason that hardline Republicans fought Harriet Myers' nomination so hard. It wasn't about her inexperience. She was clearly antiabortion and that is why her nomination was nixed.

The author should feel comforted by the fact that while Neo-Cons are in power, they are not going to outlaw abortion on their watch. The people who have abortions tend to be politically moderate or liberal, so those are the last type of kids that they want more of anyway (and we all know that they hate kids.)

I would really love to see the author organize a march or strike in protest of the fact that women still only make 74% of what men make? How about protesting the fact that women continue to be discriminated against in hiring for higher-paying positions rather than celebrating the fact that women are economically forced into sex work? These are enormous real life problems that severely affect the quality of life for women and children here and now -- not in the hypothetical future.

"Surplus" says, "Pro-lifers" have been around along time and most have been stupid enough to vote Republican based on this issue alone. This doesn't say a lot about their intelligence considering that the "Republicans have had control of both houses of congress on several occasions and yet did absolutely nothing tangible to limit abortions at the federal level. The reason why is because they didn't actually want to."

Yet they have been chipping away at the right on local levels, and many Democrats have helped them do it. The only reason that the ruling class hasn't taken away the right to abortion is that they're afraid of the response it would unleash.

The corporate media always give WAY more attention to anti-choice demonstrations than the pro-choice, and give them much better coverage. Staying home will not change that, and a pro-choice presence can only help.
