Are we in Palo Alto or Santa Cruz???

Our colorful living town has become so f*cking sterile!!!
Just got back from a week at the rainbow gathering. It was awesome. As I walk down the mall downtown today I am struck by the total sterility. Not a single musician in site or sound. No kids hanging out, no creativity...

ARE WE IN PALO ALTO YET? (or is this some kind of weird movie???!)

But sure enough there were two sidewalk events, both sponsored by the city. One was face painting for kids. The other was some kind of carriage rides. I almost got sick to my stomach. Not that these things are wrong by themselves, but the fact that all forms of life and creativity are banned and illegal on the mall, and then the city sponsors a few things on the mall to attempt to make it seem like there is real life and freedom and creativity happening is a total farce. This town has become so fucking phoney it is disgusting.

Remember years ago how alive it was here? Those days are over for sure. The mindcontrolled republicons have taken over and are trying to make this into somekind of Palo Alto by the beach.

There should be a mass protest where hundreds of people get out on a Saturday and play all kinds of music, and dance, and sing, and blow bubbles and play hackey sack or whatever!!!

Make it a media event. What, are they going to arrest a festival of happy living people? I can not believe someone didn't think of this before.

Our only hope is showing the utter sickness of this plastic consciousness that is taking over this town.

We must do it together on a single day. Any comments?

Re: Are we in Palo Alto or Santa Cruz???

This coming Saturday, July 19th, 1:30PM at Cooper and Pacific Ave. Swami X will be appearing to give tarot card readings as a fund-raiser for Mayor Emily Reilly's re-election campaign. Bubble-blowers, frisbee tossers, hacky-sackers, and chalkers are most welcome indeed!!

We might as well test as many of these stupid laws as possible---and how else, but in a massive show of civil disobedience which may not "move-along" after 1 hour. For more info: Call HUFF at 423-HUFF

WORRIED that Police and City Manager are "Juggling" with your Civil Liberties downtown with their heavy police presence & "Move Along" laws?

ANXIOUS that the Reilly-Rotkin City Council will up Police Budget $1.7 million, but slash everything else as pushed by City Manager Dick Wilson?

CONCERNED that the harsh Downtown ordinances (severely restricting peaceful sitting and soliciting, performing and socializing)won't get a 6-month review as promised last January when Council returns next Tuesday on July 22nd.

TROUBLED that peaceful political activists are going to jail (3 arrests in 2 weeks) for tabling past the 60-minutes-of-free-speech-then-Move-On deadline?

WONDERING where Council buried the "U.S. Out of Iraq", the "Don't cooperate with the Patriot Act", and the "Impeach Bush" Resolutions?

CURIOUS why City Manager-for-Life Dick Wilson will keep his $160,000/year salary while Louden Nelson Center and Harvey West pool close down for lack of funding?

Re: Are we in Palo Alto or Santa Cruz???

Swami was incredibly funny! I happened to be walking by when the "show" started. Swami was uncannily acurate in tuning into his inner guidance and knowing the answeres to the questions before they were asked. This man is a saint. I think he is my guru. He also happens to be doing outstanding work in the community. What a shining example of political activism and spiritual consciousness!! Bravo !

We should have another event sometime soon.

It should be exactly as "disgusted" wrote about above. Everyone should come out on one Saturday and play music, juggle, blow bubbles, put out small tapasties with their jewelry and wares, and generally have a great time! This is what Santa Cruz was like 15 years ago. It was a constant festival of color and music and creativity. Now it has become sterile and boring. So if you feel the inspiration, organize it and the people will come!!!

Re: Are we in Palo Alto or Santa Cruz???

You're so right. Last night I was walking down Pacific at 1AM, and I saw a police car prowling up and down Pacific, slowing to check me out, stopping wherever music was playing, the officer coming out and rousting the homeless musicians. One plucky guitar-player kept moving up and down the Ave, a game of cat-and-mouse with our publicly supported "protector of the peace (as I came home to my noisy neighbors partying at the top of their lungs, the irony was not lost on me)."

Re: Are we in Palo Alto or Santa Cruz???

Personally, I'm glad to see a diminishing of the panhandling, loitering, flopping around blocking the sidewalks, drug dealing, violence, etc. etc.. Sure, there needs to be a bit of a balance but really the downtown is not meant to be some freak show where anything goes. It's generally the few that ruin it for the majority.........isn't that the way it usually is? You can constantly criticize the police, the business community, the City Council, and so on but if people just took it upon themselves to be considerate and tolerant of others there may be no need for heavy policing and laws. Unfortunately, that simply isn't the case. Reading some of the comments in here by Norse, Becky Johnson, and others it's no wonder the downtown has problems. Instead of helping to solve the problems, these folks seems to advocate causing them.
