Santa Cruz Indymedia Editorial Policy

The Santa Cruz Indymedia collective has consensed on the following guidelines to help us decide what postings are appropriate and what are not.

Before actually making the update to the sc-imc editorial policy, the sc-imc collective wants to give you the chance to comment on the policy. All comments are welcomed, encouraged, and will be taken into consideration before actually updating the sc-imc editorial policy!

Please submit all comments (directly below this article) by Saturday August 23 (one day before the next next sc-imc general meeting which will take place on Sunday 8/24 at 7pm at the Resource Center for Nonviolence).
Santa Cruz Independent Media Center (SC-IMC) Editorial Policy

Introduction

We have consensed on the following guidelines to help us decide what postings are appropriate and what are not. We believe that these guidelines will help to make the moderating process a clearer one for IMC volunteers, for anyone who self-publishes, and finally an unencumbered, useful and open newswire for readers worldwide.

We especially encourage people to publish:

- Well written and researched, timely articles
- Eyewitness accounts of actions and demonstrations
- Coverage of Monterey Bay area issues
- Media analysis
- Investigative reports exposing injustice
- Stories on events affecting underrepresented groups
- Media produced from within underrepresented groups
- Stories with national or global significance
- Stories on people or projects working towards social and economic justice
- Original, under-reported stories of local, regional, national, or global importance.

The Santa Cruz IMC editorial collective, in order to maintain the integrity of the Newswire and the media commons it creates for our community of participants, may hide or delete posts to the Newswire at their discretion. For example, posts that contain blatantly racist, sexist, homophobic, or other hateful material intended to objectify, intimidate, or injure traditionally oppressed or under-represented groups or that link to websites that advocate the same, may be deleted.

The SC-IMC collective reserves the right to alter or amend this editorial policy without prior notice. Any alterations or amendments to this policy will be indicated by a notice posted on our Newswire.

This editorial policy is based on the policy of New York City IMC.

But it's alright then to post hateful material intended to objectify, intimidate, or injure white males, corporate executives, and drivers of SUVs?

What am I asking, of course it's permitted! If that were banned too, Indymedia wouldn't have any content at all.

Re: Santa Cruz Indymedia Editorial Policy

Is "consensed" a word? If so, why do I not find it on www.dictionary.com or in the Merriam-Webster unabridged dictionary? Is this a term that the NYC IMC coined? Does the SC IMC attempt to lend legitimacy to the coinage by adopting and using it?

Is the world view embodied by the proposed policy any more legitimate than the word "consensed"? Shouldn't the worldview of a "people's" publishing outlet be composed of the aggregate world view of all the individuals who contribute?

Re: Van/oppressed

But Van, you've forgotten your favorite untraditionally oppressed group ...those who diligently work to serve and protect you from all the bad things out there that go bump in the star filled night.

Surely indy would still be full of highly important reports.

Re: inquiringmind

"We have consensed on the following guidelines..." can be changed to "We have reached a consensus on the following guidelines..."

Thanks for pointing that out!

Re: Santa Cruz Indymedia Editorial Policy

Bobby,

You are correct. Cops are also subjected to the same prejudice here.

Which is unfortunate, as being the enforcers for an immoral and out-of-control government they bear more real guilt than any other group. If anyone benefits from the smoke screen of bias and prejudice obscuring their crimes, it's the cops.

As for protecting us in the night - all predators that seek territorial dominance provide an indirect form of protection for their prey from other predators. Predators hate competition.

If that's your idea of freedom, I suggest you go live in the wild with the other animals.

A civil society requires the elimination of predators, not achieving some self-sacrificial ecological balance with them. That sort of thinking may work for zebras who don't care if their fellows get taken down by the lion so long as they themselves manage an escape, but as a human being I believe we can do better. Well, some of us can - those who are more interested in promoting civilization than living in the proverbial concrete jungle.

But I digress.

Bradley, don't take the bait!

"consensed" is in common use in certain cultural groups. If only the words in the dictionary were "real words", the language would never grow. The dictionary is always behind the people, unless you are French and are prohibited from using certain words ...

Previous Santa Cruz Indymedia Editorial Policy

The Santa Cruz Independent Media Center collective was formed with the idea of providing a source of information, news, and analysis on, about, and for the Central Coast of California which is Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Louis Obispo, and San Benito Counties. It is the collective's belief that there is a desperate need for such a service. In order to accomplish this mission, we have elected to enforce an editorial policy that restricts newswire postings to items that fit our dedication to local issues. This is well within the guidelines of the IMC network philosophy that allows local collectives control of their editorial policy.

We do not restrict stories based on viewpoint or whether we happen to agree or disagree with them. The issue is not content, but on the accomplishment of our mission to provide a forum and information source on community issues. Existing local non-commercial media carry national and international news at a rate of 3 times that of local news. Between KPFA News, National Public Radio, and the programming on our local Free Radio Station, global and national news is more than covered.

There are over 100 IMC's worldwide that, due to the power of the Internet, are as close and as easy to access as Santa Cruz Indymedia. We do not feel a need or obligation to reproduce the content, or allow others to duplicate the content, on Santa Cruz Indymedia that can be found on these other sites. Moreover, we feel that the re-posting and cross posting of the same items to all IMC's creates a level of redundancy that verges on making an IMC network pointless.

We understand that the world is a small and interconnected place and that news about global issues and events affect everyone. However, we ask you to understand what we are trying to accomplish in serving our small community and respect our decision and our policies, as we are the ones taking the time and making the effort to make Santa Cruz Indymedia happen. There are plenty of IMC's that deal with these larger issues and stories, they are linked on our front page and are a click away. We encourage you to use them.

Independent media means just that. Independent to provide a medium that is the most effective to meet our mission in the manner in which we choose. If you want to focus your post on how a larger issue affects our community in particular, then go right ahead. If you have a question on whether your story would fit our policy, we encourage you to email us and ask.

If you disagree with our policy and feel that you have a right to post what you will on our newswire, we encourage you to start your own IMC. However, as the collective responsible for Santa Cruz Indymedia, we exercise our right to operate this IMC as we see fit. We will not hesitate to hide posts that do not meet our editorial policy.

Re: Santa Cruz Indymedia Editorial Policy

"Van" always digresses, from the first words that slip out of his mouth.

to sc-imc collective member

looks like sc-imc collective member needs to update the above post as a local only policy apparently expired with the advent of the new site.
