Just back from actions in Barcelona, Spain, Reverand Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping have fought Starbucks, Disney and Walmart in support of independent businesses and the survival of our neighborhoods.
The Church performed on Pacific Ave. in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, April 20. Church was held at Borders, the GAP, Starbucks, and Urban Outfitters.
Reverend Billy and the Stop Big Boxes Gospel Choir are on a singing and preaching tour from L.A. to Humboldt County
April 16 to 24, performing for citizens, activist groups and union locals who are resisting the predatory influx of transnational chain stores.
Some performances take place in theaters, others are “retail interventions – unannounced, unpermitted appearances that take place in “contested space supercenter lobbies, sweatshop dressing rooms and strip mall parking lots. Throughout its seven year existence the OBIE-winning Church of Stop Shopping has
fought Starbucks, Disney, Walmart (to name a few) promoting independent businesses and gift, thrift and barter economies; encouraging the survival of our neighborhoods; and giving a voice to countless sweatshop workers worldwide.

The Church of Stop Shopping performs radical “retail interventions of political theater cloaked in evangelical fervor.

fought Starbucks, Disney and Walmart in support of independent businesses and the survival of our neighborhoods. They will perform in Santa Cruz for a couple of hours on their tour from the Walmart invasions in L.A. to proposed Big Box Store developments in Northern California.

Re: Reverand Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir Stop in Santa Cruz
I especially enjoyed the cash-register exorcism at the gap, and the piano and choir concert at the coffee roasting co.
Choir members said "hey, this is a great town to perform in, the people are in suuport and the police seem very laid back." Riiiiiight.....it must be the music that tamed them.

That is the best bus by far on the hwys of
america.. I got to drive one this winter and I am
a convert.
I'm sorry I missed the visit.. it looks like big fun!!
I must try harder to make my late night party life
work with my next day activism.
I seee some folks smiling in these photos who
rarely crack smile. It must have been good.

What a hog! The worst SUV or HUMvee isnt even that bad.
Looks like we bombed Iraq so that Reverend Billy could keep his gas guzzler on the road. I'd hate to breathe whatever's coming out of that crusty-ol non-EFI pipe.
You know diesel is the worst gas to burn too, right? Because it's dirty, nasty shite compared to unleaded. That's why it's cheaper.
Way to save the environment, Billybob. So who do you support when you fill up that 50gallon tank, the foreign terrorists or the domestic ones?
Walk the walk.
Re: Reverand Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir Stop in Santa Cruz
Art & Revolution were hosts to the Rev'n Choir (they'd love to come back in the near future).
If you'd like regular updates re. future A&R activities, workshops, etc. let us know!
Name and phone # are good for confirmation.
Thanks for all your work! Rock-on!

Bring Back Billy, But on a Saturday!
The bus looked really cool. It was neat to see a 'no enemy' sticker in the bus too.
Reverand Billy mentioned that the bus they travel in sucks up a lot of gas. I'm sure they would love to drive one that runs on biodiesel or alcohol or other alternative.
Art and Revolution have organized the best events on Pacific Ave since I've been in Santa Cruz, with the exception of 'Santa Cruz Night Out' -- those three nights were great!
I look forward to seeing Reverend Billy and the Stop Big Boxes Gospel Choir again soon!
Hopefully they can stroll Pacific on, say, a Saturday afternoon...
