KUSP advertises American Water

I'm getting tired of hearing American Water being advertised on KUSP. This morning within a period of 1 minute I heard the names microsoft and american water. While the Felton residents are engaged in a dispute with the water company, I think it is unconscionable that KUSP advertises their name. Advertising for microsoft speaks for itself.

Underwriting: Reach those who make the decisions that support your business, Underwriting programming on Central Coast Public Radio provides your business with an unrivaled way to access an influential well positioned, highly educated audience. Every underwriting announcement on KUSP reaches into the homes, automobiles and offices of consumer and business decision makers.

Our listeners regard your announcement as a statement of character of a firm involved in the community. They will visit your establishment, do business with you and thank you for your support of public radio. It's a testament to the incredible loyalty public radio enjoys - a loyalty which is unique in the marketing environment. Public radio underwriting announcements are discrete and non-obtrusive - not having to compete with all the clutter and chatter on commercial stations.

Our eclectic mix of NPR news, local public affairs and music programming allows you to target the audience(s) of your choice. BTW I was listening to a tape a friend had made of the interview with Sam Farr the other day.

Something that stuck out in my mind was Farr's response to a caller who expressed concern about the bill related to the reimplementation of the draft (read the sc.indy feature here):

santacruz.indymedia.org/feature/display/9724/index.php

His response was that the legislation would never pass and one of the reasons was that this was an election year.

The interviewer did not question him at all along the lines of... but if the legislation is written then what happens after the election year is over.

I've often had bad reactions to KUSP and the fact that they carry NPR and other programs like it during the commute hours (as well as throughout the day). When I've written to them complaining about specific shows or the fact that NPR is misleading in general I've gotten written answers but the answers were always in defense of their programming such as 'NPR is better than most alternatives'.

I belive that KUSP spends in the neighborhood of $100,000 to buy the right to air these programs.
