UCSC is in Violation of their Code of Conduct

On October 5, UC Santa Cruz students, workers and Santa Cruz community members held a rally in the Baytree Plaza to raise awareness about the sweatshop-made uniforms purchased for dinning hall workers and the sweatshop-made UCSC apparel. After the rally in the Baytree Plaza, we marched to the office of Chancellor Denise Denton which is in the same building as the McHenry Library.

Rockin' the Boat: Students Rally for Sweat-Free Campus

United Students Against Sweatshops recently kicked off a campaign at over 40 colleges and universities to demand those schools accept responsibility for the wages and working conditions of garment workers who produce their college-logo t-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps. Rally Held to Support Head Start Workers

On October 3, a community support rally for Head Start workers was held in front of the Santa Cruz County Community Counseling Center (SCCCC). The rally was followed by a board of trustees meeting where the workers asked the board to approve a fair contract.

AUDIO: Malik Rahim Speaks About the Grassroots Response to Hurricane Katrina
On October 4, Malik Rahim, a longtime community activist in New Orleans and San Francisco, spoke at the Women's Building in San Francisco about the situation in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the disastrous response by the Bush administration and other government agencies. Malik, who lives in the Algiers community of New Orleans, discussed the grassroots community relief and rebuilding efforts underway through the Common Ground collective. (39:39 minutes)

Students and Workers Demand a Sweat-Free UC

As part of a national anti-sweatshop campaign taking place at over 40 colleges and universities in the U.S., students and workers from UC Santa Cruz held a rally and march to demand that UCSC apparel no longer be produced in sweatshops.
The marchers, a few of whom had family members currently working in sweatshops overseas or have had personal experiences themselves, initially educated the many passerbys in busy Baytree Plaza before marching to the Chancellor's office where a list of demands was presented to an administrative representative. The administration's follow-through will be closely watched.

WIN: Head Start Workers Poised to Strike

Launched in 1965 as part of the War on Poverty, Head Start programs provide education, health, and nutrition services to more than 22 million low-income children. Head Start workers in Santa Cruz, CA have been in contract talks for about a year, and are poised to strike if a deal isn't reached soon. WIN reporter Vinny Lombardo has more.
