The Fourth Annual May Day Labor Film Festival
24 Apr 2005
(Updated)
by labor solidarity
The 4th annual May Day Labor Film Festival, titled "Reel Work" runs through May 1st in Santa Cruz County. Reel Work features films, speakers and discussions highlighting past victories and ongoing struggles of labor movements across the globe. This year's festival includes premier screenings of an important new film on the infamous Centralia Massacre of 1919, discussions with Argentinean activists on the occupied factory movement, and noted author Paul Buhle reading from his new book, Wobblies: A Graphic History. The festival opened on April 24th with a screening of the Yes Men, a hilarious critique of corporate America.
The special theme of this year's Reel Work is the 100th anniversary of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a radical union of immigrants, the unskilled and unemployed formed to challenge the worst ravages of capitalism. The festival concludes with a May Day march and a discussion on the future of the labor movement. A schedule is available from
www.reelwork.org which will list the times, dates, locations, movies, speakers and a small synopsis of each film.

How Is Indymedia An Independent News source?
Although Indymedia is by no means perfect, its decentralized, ultra-democratic, and technologically efficient manner makes it a tremendous tool of the contemporary activist and alternative media movement. It is not independent in the sense that it is unhindered by subjective points of view, but it is independent in the sense it does not fall into the same traps of mainstream media.

History of the "no planes on 9/11" hoaxes
"In September 2004, the American Free Press newspaper published an article implying that there wasn't a plane crash in Pennsylvania (even though a lot of people saw and heard it happen). This publication is part of an ultra right-wing media group that also publishes the "Barnes Review," a Holocaust Denial publication that has praised Hitler. AFP / Barnes, by their own admission, works closely with KKK leader David Duke. Perhaps their motto should be "No Planes on 9/11 and No Gas Chambers in the Holocaust." The AFP acronym is also used by Agence-France Press, one of the world's leading media organizations, which could cause confusion and undeserved legitimacy for the American Free Press, which promotes (and creates) hoaxes that misdirect serious investigation into 9/11 complicity."
