Why Mountain Justice Summer?

Mountain Justice Summer is a call to action and a request for help from the people of the Appalachia mountains for help in saving our mountains, streams, and forest from greedy coal companies. But why are we asking for help? Frankly it's because we are losing. More than 1,000 miles of stream have been buried and destroyed and countless mountains and ridge tops have been blown up–gone for all eternity. Additionally, under the Bush administration laws have been altered to encourage and accelerate the destruction. The price of coal has doubled, and the destruction of our watersheds is accelerating and spreading out like cancer — not slowing down. Our state and federal agencies charged with protecting our environment are dealing out permits to these coal companies like crack dealers on the street corner — the coal is the crack — and the coal companies the addicts that will kill, destroy entire mountain ranges and bury streams in order to get their black fix.

Coastal Commision Staves off Special Interests
For 3 decades, it has been the duty of the
California Coastal Commision to ensure "environmentally sustainable and prudent use" of California's 1100 mile coastline. By upholding it's mandate, the commision has won for itself many enemies among those wealthy enough to own a piece of the shoreline. Recently, it's opponents have prevailed in state courts to declare the commission illegal: but those rulings are on hold pending a decision by the Supreme Court of California.

Huge Success In Santa Cruz Referendum Drive!

Following the success of the community organizing and signature gathering for the referendum petition against the Coast Hotel project in Santa Cruz, the hotel owners conducted a detailed phone survey in Santa Cruz and learned that not only the hotel, but all the people and politicians associated with it were terrifically unpopular. Following the survey, the hotel pulled the plug on the project and the community is now free to plan for their future without having to pay for a huge hotel hugging the beach.
