The following is the presentation Bill Mandel prepared for the Public Forum ("KPFA/Pacifica - Democracy Deferred?"), held at La Peña in Berkeley on November 10, 2004.

On October 30, 2004, the 2nd annual Practical Activism conference was held at UC Santa Cruz (college nine/ten multipurpose room). The day featured interactive workshops and presentations that provided students and activists from both the Monterey and San Francisco Bay with tools for local and global change.

The closing performance was by Leroy Moore and James Tracy, two members of The Molotov Mouths Outspoken Word Troupe, a collective of Bay Area politically-direct poets. Gentrification, poverty, race, disability, and discrimination are just a few of the topics passionately explored through their writing and spoken word performances.

I've just completed reading your Scharf's column, "Everybody's Business", for 19 Dec 2004, titled, "Stock market unlikely to bail out Social Security". You and Scharf are in large company on Social Security, of course. We the people have not been hit with this big a blizzard of BS from The Lying Bush, his lying surrogates, the class-race elite's top one percent, fascist corporatism's propagandists, and the money-power parasitic media mouthpieces since the invasion of Iraq.

 

In response to the FCC raiding Free Radio Santa Cruz on 9/29/04, Utah Phillips called up FRSC with the idea of a benefit concert to help get our pirate station sailing the airwaves again. Many people throughout the Santa Cruz area donated their time and resources to organize a fantastic musical benefit on December 10, 2004.
