In keeping with the original purpose and roots of IMC, Santa Cruz Indymedia looks to the Zapatista model of resistance, in which teachers, members of the good government commitees, and even doctors are not paid, but must organize money for food outside of their activism.

FREE RADIO Santa Cruz is an unlicensed micro-power radio station serving the community of Santa Cruz for almost 10 years. On Wed. Sept 29th a dozen Federal Marshals and 6 FCC agents shut the station down. Free Radio Santa Cruz was not interfering with any other stations or harming anyone with its broadcasts. The station is a community asset which was broadcasting alternative news, music and a variety of perspectives 24 hours a day. We are very grateful for the outpouring of support that we have received from the community. Many people have asked us what they can do to help. Below are some suggestions of things that you can do to support us and help us to continue our work. Thank you.

On Wednesday, September 29, armed federal agents seized the equipment and antenna from our beloved 10 year old pirate radio station – Free Radio Santa Cruz. This segment documents the action that day and the community’s reaction and their support of the station.

On Tuesday October 12, the Gadabout Traveling Film Festival rolled into Santa Cruz for a evening of films, music, coloring books and zine distribution. Local poets got the night going followed by a short video of the Free Radio Santa Cruz raid. It all took place at Barrios Unidos and raised money for Free Radio Santa Cruz and to get the Gadabout folks up to the city.

If you have not heard yet, Santa Cruz has a blooming poetry scene. All of these poets were really great and some really focused in on the attempt to silence Free Radio Santa Cruz.

Throughout the week in New York, independent journalists and activist groups used text-messaging technology to coordinate an impressive, groundbreaking campaign of direct action and comprehensive news reporting.
