NAFTA is clearly what triggered so many rural mexicans to lose their livelihood, and have to flee to cities or across the border in order to earn the basics of living, such as food and shelter. The rationale for accepting the collapse of rural agriculture due to cheaper subsidized corn from Iowa flooding the Mexican market is that the consumer would 'enjoy' the more efficiently produced and cheaper food - however... prices at the supermarket haven't come down. Everyone knows that the price of the corn syrup in soda-pop is about 4 cents, while the can costs 60 cents. The profit is all taken by the company and put into the stock market, rather than passed on to the consumer, meanwhile there is unmeasured human misery by millions of displaced farmers, and taxes that working class people have to pay for meager healthcare and policing of them
