Sure, sure, except the empires before us were all expansionist, the United States is hardly expanding its physical boundries - I'd love to see those lines disapear - but I doubt anyone in a first world country will be keen to see that happen until the rest of the world has gotten its act together.
Though, you should look into how Mexico handles it's southern borders, quite interesting - maybe if we followed suit there'd be a drop in illegal immigration.
