A candlelight vigil to honor and protest the lost lives in Iraq will be held on Tuesday, October 26 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM in the Watsonville Main Plaza.

The event will be attended by family members of Victor Gonzalez, a local Marine just killed in Iraq last week. Also present will be Fernando Suarez Del Solar, father of Jesus Suarez Del Solar, the first GI killed in Iraq.

After the vigil, at 7:30 Mr. Suarez will be giving a talk about his experiences and the realities of the military enlistment and recruitment for Latino youth. The presentation will be in the Brown Beret Office located at 406 Main Street.

Metro buses are the main form of "alternative transportation" in Santa Cruz County, despite all the rhetoric about bikes, trains and trails. I have a challenge for people who oppose Measure J but claim to support alternative transportation. Ride the bus from Watsonville to Santa Cruz every day for a week. You'll learn why many Metro bus riders are voting Yes on J. Though the No on J campaign materials don't say so, Measure J will add carpool lanes, giving buses priority on Highway 1. (The carpool lanes are not some extra, optional project; they are the priority project in the measure.) Scheduled travel time from Watsonville to Santa Cruz will drop from an hour and 15 minutes to just 30 minutes, and Metro will be able to run more trips with the same number of buses and drivers. With its focus on carpool lanes, Measure J is good for those of us who depend on the bus.

The only City Council candidates in this election who are putting forward a people’s agenda are Coral Brune and Robert Norse.

Emily Reilly was the top vote-getter in 2000. Her pleasant demeanor and her self-deprecating comments endear her to some. But what is her record? What kind of leadership has she really shown? HUFF activists have examined her record and the results are not very encouraging.

Uri Davis is a scholar and Jewish citizen of Israel, but prefers to describe himself as a Palestinian Jew. He was born in Jerusalem in 1943, when Palestine was still undivided. Dr. Davis’ research interests focus on questions of citizenship, democracy and human rights in Israel and Palestine.

EDITORS' NOTE: Amidst widespread revulsion over George Bush and everything he stands for, millions are increasingly desperate, frustrated, and angry as they realize the election of 2004 offers them no possibility to vote against the war in Iraq, the Patriot Act and other horrors of the Bush agenda. And this realization that on crucial questions confronting the people of the U.S. and the entire world John Kerry does not offer any serious challenge to Bush highlights the reality that THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE WILL NOT BE EXERCISED IN THIS ELECTION.
