UCSC Students Oppose CAFTA!

UCSC students are planning a week of action to co-incide with the Global Week of Action for economic justice. There will be five days of events to educate and activate students around the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)

Coastal Commision Staves off Special Interests
For 3 decades, it has been the duty of the
California Coastal Commision to ensure "environmentally sustainable and prudent use" of California's 1100 mile coastline. By upholding it's mandate, the commision has won for itself many enemies among those wealthy enough to own a piece of the shoreline. Recently, it's opponents have prevailed in state courts to declare the commission illegal: but those rulings are on hold pending a decision by the Supreme Court of California.

Making Sense of the UCSC Crisis

Last year, the UC made $786 million more than it spent. Yet all we hear about is the “budget crisis.� This doesn’t sound like a budget crisis to us. Our university is in crisis, it’s true, but the main issue isn’t the budget. The main issues are priorities and power. Our resources are being
extracted. The space we have to live and learn in is
contracting. What all of us really need is a say in how the university distributes its vast resources. What we need is
democratization.
