'THE FOURTH WORLD WAR' comes to California

While American airwaves are crowded with talk of a new war – narrated by generals and filmed from the noses of bombs – the human face of war is rarely seen. THE FOURTH WORLD WAR is a powerful new film from the makers of 'This Is What Democracy Looks Like', 'Zapatista', and 'Black & Gold'. It weaves together the stories of movements against empire from Palestine, Iraq, Chiapas, Argentina, South Africa, South Korea to Quebec City and Genoa.

The product of over two years of filming, The Fourth World War is a new kind of film for a new world. The intensity and immediacy of its images are beyond anything the mainstream media can shoot, the intimacy and passion of its stories are beyond anything it can feel. Directed by the award winning New York-based Big Noise Films, and narrated by Tony Award winner Suheir Hammad and Singer Michael Franti of Spearhead, it is a radical story of hope and human connection in the face of a war that shatters and divides.

"I think THE FOURTH WORLD WAR should be the center-piece of all political education for left activists in the present period. It really is that good."

Feeding Vegetarians and Vegans In Your Family For The Holidays

Family get-togethers nowadays can comprise many different diets. Often vegetarians and vegans present special challenges to family members who are not familiar with those dietary preferences. This article is for those family members. A vegetarian does not eat meat, but will eat dairy products and/or eggs. A vegan will not eat anything with meat, eggs, or dairy products. So a vegetarian can eat anything a vegan can eat, but not vice versa. With just a little forethought, these dietary preferences are not hard to accommodate. And your vegetarian/vegan guests will appreciate the efforts that show you cared. Often vegans and vegetarians resent the fact that no one cared about them having access to food that they can eat at family events, and with this little preparation, you can set the tone to be one of inclusion.

Photos from the Beach Flats Mural Celebration

A Beach Flats Mural Celebration took place on September 9 at the corner of Beach and Park just below Santa Cruz's well known Giant Dipper roller coaster. The Beach Flats Mural Project was always meant to be more than a finished mural. It was meant to be a process that brought together people of all ages, all backgrounds and skills, in a community project.

--

Mas que pintura en una pared el proyecto del mural siempre lo comenzamos con la idea de que fuera un proyecto comun. Nuestro mural ha involucrado a personas de todas edades, origines y destrezas en un proyecto comun.

ART IN ACTION performance pix

The Art in Action Camp is a ten-day summer camp for 16 to 25 year-olds that brings together poets, singers, dancers, artists and other young visionaries to create a vision of freedom and hope for the future—while voicing opposition to corporate war abroad and the criminalization of youth at home.

Art in Action took place this year from August 16 through August 25 at the Quaker Center in Ben Lomond, on an 80-acre redwood forest just twenty minutes north of Santa Cruz. Art in Action's final day, August 25, concluded with a 7:00 pm evening public performance in the Santa Cruz Veteran's Hall at 846 Front Street, Santa Cruz. (announcement)

Halloween Midnight Mystery Ride

On October 28, a Halloween Midnight Mystery Ride took place in the streets of Santa Cruz. In the short tradition of the Midnight Mystery Ride in Santa Cruz, riders have always met up at the Poet and Patriot Pub at midnight for a stroll through Santa Cruz. The rides, which are normally led by one person and end at a different mystery location, take place every other Friday after the Guerilla Drive-In.

But on this night, October 28, about 35 riders gathered in the parking lot of Satrun Cafe and eventually realized that there was not a designated leader for the ride. Some riders decided that this Midnight Mystery Ride would be different in the sense that there would not be a single leader.

Halloween Critical Massers Ride the Streets of Santa Cruz

beach_10-28-05.jpgCritical Mass bike rides are unorganized coincidences taking place in many small and large communities throughout the world, usually on the last Friday of the month. Critical Mass in October is especially fun because it is a Hallowen Ride where people dress and act in a freakish fashion.

On October 28, about 50 cyclists took to the streets of Santa Cruz for this year's Halloween Critical Mass at around 5:30pm. The Critical Mass has been growing in the last few months and this mass would have been larger if there was not a confusion (see: "unorganized coincidence") about what time people were meeting at and leaving from the clock tower. Still, numerous riders were able to find the mass in streets and join in the fun!
