City Council Blocks Affordable Apartments
31 Mar 2004
(Updated)
by
R. Paul Marcelin-Sampson
What I saw at the March 23rd, 2004 Santa Cruz City Council meeting made me feel ashamed to live here. Council rejected 46 affordable apartments slated for an empty lot at High and Cardiff. Developer Maynard Manson intended to build studios for workers, students and people with disabilities. Instead, Council gave in to privileged homeowners who live nearby. This article focuses on homeowner prejudice and city council equivocation.

A couple thousand people marched through the streets in a high-spirited demonstration of unity. The support from community members observinging the march was tremendous. California Rice Commission Approves Two GE Drug-Producing Rice Varieties Spliced with Synthetic Human Genes
31 Mar 2004
by
Californians for GE-Free Agriculture
On March 29th, the California Rice Commission gave their approval for the planting and milling of two genetically engineered drug-producing rice varieties spliced with synthetic human genes. This will be the first commercial pharmaceutical food crop in the world and could be planted anywhere in the state.
The Food and Drug Administration has established a zero tolerance for pharmaceutical crop products in food and animal feed. Contamination of the food supply with this rice is inevitable!
Final approval for this Pharmaceutical Rice must still be granted by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). CDFA may be making a decision at any time.
