Santa Cruz First Night Parade of Freaks
Call out for Santa Cruz DIY New Year's Eve parade and party
After several years of city-sponsored mediocrity, First Night Santa Cruz officially goes belly-up. To hell with city-sponsored anything anyway. Let's do our own parade. A Last Night celebration. A last night of waiting for governments, institutions, or anyone else to entertain us, satisfy us, bring us security, freedom, or joy. We reclaim our streets and usher in the new year with our own celebration.
We're not asking for permits or permission. We're just gonna do it. We'll start at one end of the mall and march down Pacific. Extra bonus points if we can pull off a swell dance party to rollicking live music on the other end. This is your parade, your celebration, and your new year. Interested?
Don't wait to see who else is involved or whether we will really pull this off. Fuck it. Jump in.

GLBT Alliance: Hate-Based Reggae Out of Tune With Santa Cruz Values
29 Aug 2005
(Updated)
by featurizer
Deja vu.
Local Santa Cruz night club, The Catalyst, is bringing another reggae singer to town who advocates for violence against queer people. In October 2004,
Capelton was scheduled to perform and was eventually cancelled due to community protest. Now,
Sizzla, a self-professed murderer of gay men, is supposed to perform on Septemeber 11th at the club.
The GLBT Alliance is asking the community to exercise their collective consumer voice and tell the Catalyst management to cancel this hate-filled show.

Cops Visit Guerilla Drive-In
06 Aug 2005
by Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In
A Harrowing Tale of Authoritarian Intervention
The benefit was a roaring success. Something like 50 to 75 people came out to support Dances With Kittens and GDI on an "off" Friday. The movie was unexpectedly great. The new amp worked well. Everyone had a blast. Someone inquired about helping us financially to get a bulb or speakers (Was it you? Talk to us!)
Now dealing with the cops is old hat for us. We've been kicked out of the Harvey West area and from under the Soquel Bridge. But we've been at the Westside railroad tracks site for two years now with no problem.
Just as the movie finished, a Santa Cruz Police officer came to tell us they'd received a noise complaint. He said that he was being "nice" and could easily ticket us for "amplified sound without a permit" and "noise after 10pm."

Radio Free Brattleboro Shut Down By Feds
22 Jun 2005
by passin' it on
Brattleboro, Vermont - At 6:58 a.m., June 22, 2005, armed with a warrant issued by a Burlington magistrate, United States Marshals entered the studios of Radio Free Brattleboro and seized its broadcasting equipment. The seizure of equipment and shutdown of rfb's local broadcasts under authority of a warrant issued in Burlington comes while an action is still pending before Judge J. Garvan Murtha in the federal court in Brattleboro.
Rfb does not operate in defiance of government but rather from the belief of its members and listeners that community radio is essential to good government and democratic process. Radio free brattleboro has always stressed to the public and to the FCC that it will adhere to FCC guidelines and will serve the public whether licensed or not.
