City Council Makes Move to Redevelop Dream Inn to Five Story Convention Center, Make Your Voice Heard
16 Jan 2005
(Updated)

Within Santa Cruz County there is an entity separate from the City yet still directly connected to it. This entity is the
Redevelopment Agency. The purpose of the redevelopment agency is to, separately from the City, "improve" blighted areas, not to blight improved areas -- yet it has just this in mind.
In an sneaky deal between the Redevelopment Agency and the Coast Hotel,
plans have been devised to demolish the current hotel and its parking lot and replace it with a five-story convention center and gigantic matching parking structure. Because of its controversy the City has been planning in secrecy for about two years, and information about it has just been released to the public. Aside from incredibly biased photographs portraying the plans blocking Cowell's beach from public access, included in this package is a payoff for the Redevelopment Agency alone -- no direct revenue is paid to the City yet at the same time the City would be forced to pay for the construction.
One Commenter writes: Public Hearing on the Redevelopment of the Coast Hotel is 7 pm Tuesday, January 18 in City Council Chambers, 809 Center St. and 7 pm Wednesday, January 19, in the Civic Auditorium, 307 Church St.

Join us on Thursday, January 20th, at the County Courthouse, 701 Ocean Street in Santa Cruz for a good old fashioned rally, from 4:30 PM to 5:45 PM, and culminating with a mass swearing in of all those present as Collective President Pro-Tem of the USA.
then, at 5:45, we will march to the Collateral Damage Sculpture/Town Clock Park, corner of Water and River Streets, to mourn and honor the victims of war, call for an end to the Iraq Occupation, and lay flowers of remembrance in silence and reflection
at 6:30, we will proceed across Water Street, to the Sister Cities Circle next to the Post Office - together we will rekindle the torch of our giant Statue of Liberty Puppet, bringing her spirit and her purpose back to life!!
Update:
George McGovern will speak at about 6:45pm

Men who batter women are terrorists
14 Jan 2005
by
Utopia Bold

"Domestic violence" is overwhelmingly MALE violence against women. The FBI's definition of terrorism is, "the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce the government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives."
Men who batter women use force and violence to "intimidate or coerce" in furtherance of their "social objective" – male supremacy. Since women are a "segment" of "the civilian population," men who batter them are legally "terrorists."
Presently, men control religion and government. Thus, issues which particularly interest and affect women such as domestic violence, the environment, housing, child care, job training, education, family planning, and health care are chronically underfunded – if they're funded at all.
Wife-beating is a "traditional family value." The "Rule of Thumb" was a law allowing Englishmen to beat their wives with a stick "no thicker than a man's thumb" to make them obey. According to the U.S. surgeon general, battering is the number one "health" problem of women in America.
