Right To Sleep Summit

May 4th, activists from up and down the Coast gathered at the House of Santa Cruz Green Party insurgent Thomas Leavitt for a Santa Cruz Right to Sleep Summit. Their objective: to end Sleeping Bans in three states and support protective encampments like Santa Cruz's Camp Paradise, Portland, OR's Dignity Village, Seattle's Tent City III, and Isla Vista's Camp Home Sweet Home.

Camp Paradise is Back

Camp Paradise, once an illegal homeless encampment along the San Lorenzo River, has been rebuilt on 10 acres of woodlands behind the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. No longer a rogue operation, they are now the guests of the church with permission to use the land "indefinitely" by the land owner (a retired priest who owns both this church and another in Watsonville).

SC Coalition to Free Mumia marches

Activists rallied this afternoon at the clock tower around 11:30a and marched down Pacific Ave to raise awareness on the issues of Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier, and police brutality in general. A few Santa Cruz Police hovered nearby but did not bother marchers, even when the parade momentarily took over Pacific Ave blocking traffic.

Camp Paradise to Return
Larry Templeton intends to rebuild Camp Paradise this Thursday or Friday. Reinforcements from Oregon's "Dignity Village" are pouring into town, to increase Larry's numbers and help him make his stand. Meanwhile, SCPD officer Eric Seilly is slashing tents along the San Lorenzo again.

On January 30th, at 2:45 p.m., two SCPD officers approached the HUFF table and declared that the table was obstructing the sidewalk. Without giving HUFF activists Robert Norse or Zoe Joy Einbinder a chance to move the table, Baker announced he'd been videotaping them all afternoon and had observed that "several people had to walk around them [HUFF]" Norse offered to move the table, saying that it was the first he'd been told of the alleged obstuction...Baker decided to handcuff and take Norse into custody for the infraction citiation after Norse publicly announced he was being ticketed for "operating a political table" and "petitioning". Baker also confiscated the tape recording Norse was making of the arrest process.

Turkeys, chickens, ducks and other poultry suffer horrible lives and are cruelly slaughtered. Even "organic free range" birds die horrible deaths.

Tunis,(11-18-05) The World Summit on the Information Society has just released a statement of their resounding success in Tunisia, where they maped the course of the internet toward a goal of global connectivity by 2015. Meanwhile, the "digital divide" was demonstrated throughout Tunis, where internet sites were blocked and civil society organisations experienced a police crackdown.
