Resisting Nuclear Weapons 60 Years After Hiroshima and Nagasaki
01 Aug 2005
(Updated)
by Paloma
August 6th and 9th mark the 60th anniversaries of the
atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. The San Francisco Bay Area's
Livermore Lab is one of the national laboratories that serves as the brain of the U.S. nuclear weapons complex, which today is developing weapons to support U.S. wars of empire and continuing to contaminate the air and soil of cities surrounding it. On Saturday, anti-nuclear activists will meet there to proclaim,
"No Nukes, No Wars!"

Nationwide, peace advocates will
meet at the four central US nuclear weapons sites to call for an end to nuclear weapons proliferation. Locally, activists will meet for a
ceremony to remember of the victims of atomic bombings. Afterwards, they'll
march to
Lockheed Martin, world’s largest maker and exporter of weapons. On Sunday, there will be
commemoration of the victims of war at the Collateral Damage statue in Santa Cruz.

Two activists are
still in jail for defending the first amendment in the recent Grand Jury witchhunt. More activists
are receiving subpoenas daily. Today the war on Free Speech in San Diego was escalated to a new level.
This morning, July 21st, at approximately 11AM, Pirate 96.9 was raided by the FCC.

Interview on Free Radio Santa Cruz | Please replay on your free, community and pirate radio stations.
The broadcast location of Pirate 96.9 was raided by a number of FCC agents with marshalls. No one was present at the location, so the FCC broke the locks on their doors, entered by force, took their equipment and left. They left a warrant behind them.
The antenna was taken as well as a number of other major components of broadcasting equipment.
Pirate 96.9 is currently off the air. More information at

Declaring Indepedence from the Dominant Paradigm on July 4th
During the past Independence Day weekend, several concerned residents bipassed picnics and fireworks in favor of a more thoughtful approach to the 229th anniversary of the United States' independence from Great Britain.
On Friday, locals gathered at Seabright Beach for an old-fashioned flag burning party, complete with a bonfire and a large improv band. They saught to draw attention to the current bill pending Senate approval that would outlaw flag burning.

Local college students gathered Sunday in downtown Santa Cruz amid pleased onlookers in a demonstration against the corporatization of our culture.
An unusual parade entry in the Aptos World's Shortest Parade generated both applause and boos as members of the MediaWatch and Art and Revoltion project simulated a global power struggle --- with George and Laura Bush behind the wheel of a massive truck and the majority of the world pushing it from behind.

The Project: Spring Insurrection
29 Jun 2005
(Updated)
by The Project Collective
The Project Collective strives to document and inspire radical actions that are relevant to local, regional, and global socioeconomic justice. We believe independent media plays a crucial role in facilitating dialogue, organizing mass mobilizations, and encouraging daily acts of resistance.
In our latest issue, titled "
Spring Insurrection," we focus on the
string of radical actions that hit the UC system during Spring quarter. From those who participated we receive accounts and critiques of the
counter-military recruitment action at the career fair, the various strikes (
AFSCME and
CUE), Tent U (

2), and the disruption of the Regent's Meeting at UCSF (

policies of torture, Bush's favorite
Jesus-loving rapist, an
interview with Barrios Unidos founder Daniel Alejandrez, an
interview with Mayor Mike Rotkin, and
other tidbits to fuel the insurrection!
Enjoy and keep fighting! - The Project Collective

Santa Cruz Guerilla Drive-In
A glimpse into the controversial and often dangerous operations of the 7-year-old Arab-language Al Jazeera news network, offers us a fierce yet often surprisingly friendly debate about the clashing ways in which the U.S. invasion and takeover of Iraq have been portrayed by American and Arab journalists.
