Watsonville Brown Berets and UCSC Students Against War (SAW) Rally to Kick Recruiters Out of WHS
On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 19th and 20th, recruiters from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Navy were at the Watsonville High Senior Day, organized by Watsonville Cabrillo College and Watsonville High.
More than a dozen tax-funded police with motorcycles and squad cars watched over counter-recruiters at a demonstration organized by the Watsonville Brown Berets.
Watsonville High administrators told protestors to quiet down, threatening two students with arrest - one for telling her peers not to join the military, and the other because he was playing a small drum.
Police, carring bags full of riot-gear, consistently told protestors they were not allowed in the building or even on the steps. A student, driving by, honked her horn in support of the protests. A throng of police immediately pulled her over and cited her.

UCSC Students Against War Teach-In Draws Hundreds
22 Mar 2005
by Students Against War (SAW) - The Project
On March 3rd, Students Against War (SAW), a newly formed UCSC organization, held a teach-in about the war in Iraq. SAW is comprised of three different campaigns that work closely together to fight against manifestations of the war-machine on a very local level. At the teach-in each group presented its current projects and through break-out groups, encouraged new students to get involved. Here is an overview of what was brought up at the event.

39 Cities on the California Coast Call for Peace
21 Feb 2005
by Ann Simonton and Vinny Lombardo

Peace groups in over 40 California coastal communities staged
a synchronized rally on February 19 along an 800 mile stretch of Highway 1, from the Oregon border, all the way to San Diego. Despite intermittent rains, and a moderate wind, fifteen Santa Cruz residents stood for two hours on the Branciforte overpass; facing the north and south bound lanes of Highway 1 traffic with their peace flags, and banners.
Local peace activists have decided to move their weekly vigil to the Branciforte overpass, and will meet there each Friday at 5 pm for similar demonstrations.

Activist Renews Holiday Fast in Protest
An on-again-off-again Monterey Bay area writer and education critic has renewed his Ghandian nonvioolent tactic of fasting on major holidays this Hanukah/Christman/Kwanza. Occasionally critical of UCSC and Montery, Arjuna has drwan the wrath of Santa Barbara Community College official who issued an edict banning him from campus on "utterly trumped up charges that read like they are straight from the Keystone Cops."

COINTELPRO: The Dangers We Face
23 Dec 2005
(Updated)
by
from radioforall
Despite the fact that Santa Cruz has largely turned into a sleepy, rich community, some peaceful interest groups are still targeted by infiltrators, according the the most recent revelation that UCSC SAW was profiled by the FBI.
People should not be paranoid, but should know what is going on. The section about people who disrupt groups is especially interesting.
"Over the years we have been warned about the danger of subversive organizations that would threaten our liberties, subvert our system, would encourage its members to take further illegal action to advance their views, organizations that would incite and promote violence, pitting one American group against another... There is an organization that does fit those descriptions, and it is the organization, the leadership of which has been most constant in its warning to us to be on guard against such harm. The [FBI] did all of those things."
